What Is Cheater Quilt Fabric?

Cheater quilt fabric is printed to resemble patchwork, quilt blocks, or an assembled quilt top. The shapes and color changes are part of the fabric design, rather than separate pieces sewn together.

The appeal is simple: you can enjoy a beautiful quilt-block arrangement while reducing the cutting and piecing needed for your project. Add batting and backing, quilt the layers, and finish the edges to turn the printed design into a quilted piece.

Cheater fabric describes the appearance of the print. Individual products may be titled “patchwork,” “quilt blocks,” “home décor,” or another collection-specific name.

Create a Table Runner with a Printed Patchwork Center

A printed patchwork design can make a beautiful center for a table runner. Choose a section of the fabric that suits your desired length and width, then add coordinating borders if you wish.

Quilting along the printed block outlines can emphasize the patchwork effect. You can also use an overall quilting design to add texture across the surface. The printed layout gives you a starting point; your quilting and finishing make the project your own.

Explore table runner patterns and mats and table topper patterns for project ideas. Check the cutting layout before substituting printed patchwork for a pattern’s pieced section, since adjustments may be needed.

Give Your Quilt Back a Patchwork Look

Printed patchwork fabric offers an especially appealing option for quilt backing. Pair a pieced quilt top with a backing that also looks like quilt blocks, creating visual interest on both sides.

Selected designs are available as wide quilt backing fabrics, including 108-inch widths. A sufficiently wide backing can reduce or eliminate the need to join backing sections, depending on your quilt’s dimensions.

Before ordering, allow the extra backing required by your quilting method or longarm quilter. Consider the direction of the printed blocks and how they will appear when the quilt is turned over.

Choose the Right Width and Material

Cheater quilt fabrics come in different widths. Standard-width selections are often approximately 43–44 inches wide, while some wider designs measure around 58 inches. Selected prints are also offered as 108-inch quilt backings.

Width is only part of the decision. Read each product description for its material, weight, printed repeat, and selling unit. Home décor fabrics and other specialty materials may have a different feel from standard quilting cotton.

Measure your intended project and consider where the printed blocks will fall before cutting. If you want complete motifs at the edges or need to match a repeat across joined sections, allow additional fabric.

Make Wall Hangings, Pillows, and Smaller Projects

Printed quilt blocks can also become decorative wall hangings, pillow fronts, and smaller quilted projects. A favorite section may provide all the visual detail you need, while coordinating borders give you flexibility with the finished size.

Browse wall hanging patterns, pillow and décor patterns, and quilt patterns for inspiration. Shop fabrics by color to find complementary borders and binding.

For instruction and more project ideas, visit our Free Downloads and Video Tutorials page. Check individual tutorials for the patterns, supplies, and available downloads needed to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cheater quilt fabric?
Cheater quilt fabric features printed designs that resemble pieced quilt blocks or patchwork. The patchwork appearance is printed onto the fabric rather than created by sewing separate pieces together.

Is cheater quilt fabric already quilted?
No. A printed patchwork design is not the same as quilting. To make a quilted project, you generally add batting and backing, stitch through the layers, and finish the edges.

Can I use cheater fabric for a table runner?
Yes. Printed patchwork can form the center of a table runner, with optional coordinating borders. Plan your cutting around the design’s scale, direction, and repeat.

Can cheater quilt fabric be used as backing?
Yes, when the material is appropriate for your quilt. Printed patchwork makes a decorative backing, and selected designs come in wide widths such as 108 inches.

What widths are available?
Widths vary by product. Selections may include approximately 43–44-inch fabric, wider fabric around 58 inches, and 108-inch quilt backing. Always check the individual listing.

How should I quilt printed patchwork fabric?
You can quilt along printed block outlines to emphasize the pieced appearance or choose an overall quilting design. Follow your batting’s recommended quilting distance.

Is cheater quilt fabric suitable for beginners?
It can be a helpful choice because it reduces piecing. Beginners still need to plan cutting, layering, quilting, and finishing, so choose a manageable project and suitable instructions.

How much cheater quilt fabric should I buy?
Measure your project and account for fabric width, seam allowances, printed repeats, and any borders. For backing, include the extra fabric required by your quilting method or longarm quilter.
