Frequently Asked Questions About Quilt Backings

How do I know what size backing I need?
The general rule for measurement is that the fabric backing of a quilt should be approximately 4” larger than the quilted top on all sides of the quilt to allow for some of the shrinkage that naturally happens during the quilting process.
How do you piece a quilt backing?
A quilt backing can be pieced just like the quilt top, or simply be one fabric pattern or color. There are limitless options for quilt backs as some quilters prefer more intricate, complementary designs and others opt for minimalist or solid colors to keep the focus on the beautiful detail of the quilt top and stitching.
What is the best material for a quilt backing?
Quilting cotton is the most popular choice for quilt backing fabrics, but you can also use flannel, quilter’s linen, or virtually any other fabric. It is best practice to make sure the backing fabric is of a similar fiber to the top and has been preshrunk to match the quilt top. This avoids any puckering or wrinkling that happens when fabrics shrink at different rates.
How do I know the best backing I should buy?
The general rule for measurement is that the fabric backing of a quilt should be approximately 4” larger than the quilted top on all sides of the quilt to allow for some of the shrinkage that naturally happens during the long arm quilting process.
As far as what type of material you can use for a backing, you’ll want to make sure it matches your quilt top for washing purposes (since it’ll all be washed together) to make sure fabrics don’t shrink disproportionately or require different washing methods or treatments. For example, you don’t want to use a fabric that requires dry cleaning on a quilt with machine washable fabrics that you intend to wash at home.
What are the advantages of using a 108" wide backing fabric?

Some advantages of using a 108" wide backing fabric instead of piecing one using standard width fabric is the time it saves. You don't have to spend the time and effort piecing fabric together into the right size for your quilt. The finished look tends to be cleaner without any distracting seams, and 108" backing fabric often takes advantage of its size, featuring large images that wouldn't be possible to achieve with standard size fabrics.
