Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns for Precise Quilt Designs

Foundation Paper Piecing, often called FPP, is a quilting technique that uses a printed paper foundation to help create precise blocks, crisp points, detailed shapes, and complex angles. Fabric is sewn directly to the printed foundation in a specific order, making it possible to achieve intricate designs that can be challenging with traditional piecing. Shabby Fabrics offers FPP patterns for everything from individual blocks and seasonal wall hangings to table runners and statement quilts.

Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns for Every Season

Create throughout the year with Foundation Paper Piecing patterns inspired by seasons, holidays, and timeless quilting motifs. Explore stars, hearts, geometric designs, flowers, patriotic projects, Christmas designs, and more, including patterns from the Shabby Fabrics Foundation Paper Piecing Series. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Foundation Paper Piecing?

Foundation Paper Piecing, or FPP, is a quilting technique in which fabric is sewn directly onto a printed paper foundation. The printed lines guide placement and stitching, helping quilters create accurate blocks with sharp points, precise angles, and intricate shapes.

What does FPP mean in quilting?

FPP stands for Foundation Paper Piecing. The abbreviation is commonly used by quilters and pattern designers to describe patterns made using the foundation paper piecing technique.

Is Foundation Paper Piecing good for beginners?

Yes. Beginners can learn Foundation Paper Piecing by starting with simpler blocks and following step-by-step instructions. Shabby Fabrics' own Foundation Paper Piecing Series is specifically described as beginner-friendly and includes pre-printed foundation papers, fabric-labeling stickers, and accompanying tutorials.

What can I make with Foundation Paper Piecing?

Foundation Paper Piecing can be used to make quilt blocks, full quilts, table runners, wall hangings, table toppers, seasonal décor, and other quilted projects. Shabby Fabrics' current pattern and tutorial collections span many of these project types.

Why use Foundation Paper Piecing?

Foundation Paper Piecing is particularly useful when a design requires accurate points, intricate angles, small pieces, or complex geometric shapes. The printed foundation helps guide each seam for precise results.

Does Shabby Fabrics have Foundation Paper Piecing tutorials?

Yes. Shabby Fabrics has an extensive dedicated Foundation Paper Piecing tutorial collection, including projects from its recurring FPP series as well as quilts, table runners, table toppers, and other projects.

Does Shabby Fabrics sell Foundation Paper Piecing kits?

Yes. Individual products in Shabby Fabrics' Foundation Paper Piecing Series have coordinating kits available. For example, the March project links directly to its corresponding FPP kit.

What supplies do I need for Foundation Paper Piecing?

Supplies vary by pattern, but you'll generally need the pattern or printed foundation papers, fabric, thread, a sewing machine, cutting tools, and basic quilting notions. Always check the individual pattern for specific requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns

What is the difference between English Paper Piecing (EPP) and Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)?

Alternate:Both English Paper Piecing (EPP) and Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) are techniques where fabric is cut into smaller shapes to be pieced together, using paper (or templates) as a temporary stabilizer and guide.

Both techniques allow for improved accuracy, both can be done with a sewing machine, and both are great methods to use when piecing together a larger image in a similar style to a mosaic or collage. Here are a few of the biggest differences between the two:

In EPP, the quilter is working with fabric pieces that are in the shape and size of the finished patchwork, piecing it together as you would a puzzle.

EPP requires the quilter to cut out each shape and baste the fabric and paper templates together using either thread or glue before getting started.

EPP traditionally uses hand-stitching (or machine-stitching) to carefully sew only the touching edges of the fabric seams together.

EPP uses heavier card stock paper that can be removed from the shaped fabric and reused again and again.

In FPP, the quilter is working with fabric pieces that are larger than the finished size and include seam allowances as they work from the center of a piece, layering outward.

FPP typically uses a sewing machine (though it can also be sewn by hand) to adhere the fabric pieces directly onto the paper pattern, cutting them to size as more are added.

FPP allows the quilter to get started right away, using a sewing machine to sew right onto the paper, but requires the quilter to measure seam allowances for each fabric piece as they go.

FPP, because of the difference in the way paper is used to stabilize and piece the fabrics together, the paper used is a lighter or standard weight paper that is torn from the finished seams and discarded.

What is Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)?

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a piecing technique that uses paper as a stabilizer for fabric pieces that are sewn together one at a time, working from the inside of a shape outward to create a mosaic-like image. FPP is an especially fantastic technique for working with tiny fabric pieces and complicated images.

In FPP, a sewing machine is used to adhere the fabric pieces directly onto the back side of the printed paper pattern, cutting them to size as more are added. The quilter is working with fabric pieces that are larger than the finished size and include seam allowances as they work from the center of a piece, layering outward. Measuring a ¼” seam as each fabric is attached to the growing work, quilters then trim any excess fabric, keeping the edges neat and ensuring the perfect size every time.

Because of the way paper is used to stabilize the fabric in one piece, serving as the foundation on which patchwork is attached, the paper used is a lighter freezer weight or standard weight paper that is torn from the finished seams and discarded once the patchwork is finished. Some quilters opt to leave the paper inside the finished project, especially if it's a decor item that would not need to be washed.

Follow along with Jen in our Foundation Paper Piecing video tutorials to see this technique in action along with some helpful tricks to make this your new favorite piecing technique!

Do I need to use a pattern to do Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)?

While it is possible to write your own pattern for FPP, we recommend that quilters follow a pattern until they reach an advanced enough level to write one of their own!

Writing an FPP pattern is a lot of work and calculation to create a larger image or mosaic-like design, since the patchwork is built in growing layers from the inside out.
