Jelly Roll Quilt Patterns for Precut Fabric Strips

Make the most of your favorite precuts with Jelly Roll quilt patterns designed around coordinating fabric strips. From traditional quilts and modern geometric designs to table runners, bags, seasonal projects, and home décor, Jelly Roll patterns offer creative ways to turn coordinated strips into beautiful finished projects. Shabby Fabrics' current assortment extends beyond bed quilts into runners, bags, bowls and other projects, so keeping some broader project language is appropriate.

What Is a Jelly Roll?

A Jelly Roll is a coordinated bundle of precut fabric strips, typically measuring 2.5 inches wide by the width of fabric. A bundle commonly contains around 40 strips, although the exact number can vary by collection and manufacturer. Because the fabrics are already coordinated and cut into consistent strips, Jelly Rolls are especially convenient for strip piecing, patchwork, and other precut-friendly quilt designs.

More Ways to Create with Jelly Rolls

Jelly Rolls can be used for much more than traditional quilts. Explore patterns for table runners, bags, seasonal décor, and other projects that make creative use of precut strips. Shop Jelly Rolls for coordinating collections, or explore Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, Fat Quarter Bundles, and other Precut Fabrics to discover even more precut-friendly ways to sew.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Jelly Roll in quilting?

A Jelly Roll is a bundle of coordinated precut fabric strips, typically measuring 2.5 inches wide by the width of fabric. Shabby Fabrics notes that its precut strips are usually approximately 43–44 inches long and commonly come in bundles of around 40 strips, although dimensions and quantities can vary by manufacturer.

What are Jelly Roll quilt patterns?

Jelly Roll quilt patterns are patterns designed to work with precut 2.5-inch fabric strips. They allow quilters to use coordinated fabric collections while reducing some of the cutting required before piecing.

Are Jelly Roll quilt patterns good for beginners?

Many Jelly Roll patterns can be excellent choices for beginners because the fabric is already cut into consistent-width strips. Pattern difficulty varies, so beginners should check the individual pattern's skill level and construction techniques.

How many strips are in a Jelly Roll?

Jelly Rolls commonly contain about 40 strips, but the number varies depending on the fabric collection and manufacturer. Always check the individual precut bundle and pattern requirements before beginning a project.

How wide are Jelly Roll strips?

Jelly Roll strips are typically 2.5 inches wide and cut across the width of the fabric. Shabby Fabrics describes its Jelly Roll-friendly patterns around precut 2.5-inch strips.

What can I make with a Jelly Roll?

Jelly Rolls can be used for quilts, table runners, bags, bowls, seasonal projects, home décor, and other patchwork projects. Shabby Fabrics' current Jelly Roll pattern assortment includes several of these project types.

Can I use other brands of 2.5-inch fabric strips with Jelly Roll patterns?

Often, yes. Different manufacturers use different names for precut 2.5-inch strips, including strip rolls and Roly Polys. However, strip counts and dimensions can vary, so always compare the pattern requirements with the specific precut bundle you're using.

What's the difference between a Jelly Roll and a Charm Pack?

The main difference is the shape of the precut fabric. Jelly Rolls contain long 2.5-inch-wide strips, while Charm Packs contain precut squares. Because the shapes are different, patterns designed specifically for each precut type make it easier to use the fabric efficiently.
